About the Author

Mahadevi Verma (1907–1987) hailed as the "Adhunik Meera" (Modern Meera), was a pioneering Indian poet, author, freedom fighter and educationist. As one of the four pillars of “Chhayavad Yug” (Romanticism Era) in Hindi literature —alongside Jaishankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', and Sumitranandan Pant—Mahadevi gave Hindi poetry a distinctive voice, marked by solitude, longing, a strong spiritual quest, centered on themes of affection, pain, and love for innocent animals and nature around. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Jnanpith Award. She was also a champion for women's rights and social reform. Verma’s prose, especially her memoirs like Mere Bachpan Ke Din, Smriti Ki Rekhayen, Mera Parivar reflect her compassionate worldview and intellectual depth. While her poetry collections like “Yama”, “Nihar”, and “Neerja” are literary milestones, her “prose writings” are equally celebrated as timeless classics. Mahadevi Verma’s legacy remains foundational in both Hindi poetry and prose, bridging tradition and modernity with grace.
