The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same and this couldn't be truer, especially when talking about the status of women in our country. Rape laws have been amended and there are hundreds of fast-track courts, but Nirbhaya, whose brutal rape horrified the nation, gets justice after seven long years and even that is a question mark until March 20. Isn't it a national shame that today we have 90 cases of rape being registered in our country every day? Not to mention the number of cases that goes unreported. Despite several measures, cases of violence against women and acid attacks are on the rise. And even with popular schemes like the Cradle Baby and Girl Protection Scheme, female babies continue to be fed milk laced with poison. Be it nutrition, healthcare or education, the male child is still given preference even in this 21st century.

While it always feels like one step forward, two steps back, what we cannot forget is that India's top court recently ordered equal roles for women in the army. Today women have made a mark in previously male-dominated jobs, breaking gender stereotypes we have female auto drivers, fighter pilots and even delivering for Amazon and Swiggy.

The going may be tough, but we are getting there.
